Meet Me Monday: Roland Poom
1. Introduce yourself shortly.
My name is Roland Poom. I’m a 21-year-old sportsman and entrepreneur. I always choose the riskier and more difficult option which sometimes makes situations more complicated but that’s where the fun is. I always try to only do the things I’m interested in because that’s how you succeed.
- Three facts about yourself.
- I love speed and adrenaline
- I constantly need sun.
- I love dark humour
- What do you like the most in EBS?
The people who study at EBS. So much ambition in one building. Awesome!
- Tell us a little about your hobbies.
I’m a rally driver. I started when I was 14. I got my driving license at the age of 16 and started competing in the Estonian Championships. Rally makes me forget everything else that’s going on around me. After the start the lights go off and there’s only one goal – make it to the finish as soon as possible. We’ve shown our talent enough here, so the next goal is the World Rally Championships. We plan to attend one of those this year and next year compete for the whole season.
- How did you get involved in such sport?
Completely by accident. When usually people start doing this kind of sport thanks to a father or a relative, it was different for me. When I was little I used to go watch rallies all the time with a family friend and at one point I told my dad that now I need a car to start practicing and that’s how it went.
- What are the biggest benefits of being a rally driver?
For me, the best thing is that you can travel all over the world, meet new people, work with the top guys of the field and get closer to achieving your own goals.
- What are the downsides of being a professional rally driver?
You have to cancel a lot of events, since during the season your weekends are packed. In addition, it’s difficult at school since the competition period is during the same time as the exams. But we try to make it work.
- Describe your daily schedule from the moment you wake up until you go to sleep.
Every day is different but my usual day begins – as usual – with a quick breakfast. Mostly at school, though, since I wake up late. Usually I have two lectures a day, so my days aren’t that long at the Lauteri Street. After school I attend to my business. Lately, most of the time has gone to opening an online store and choosing new products. I like to take it easy, so it’s possible that at 4pm I end up at a cinema. I do still deal with my business even after 10pm. I try to make it to the gym but, let’s be honest, I could do it more often. I love sleeping, so I try to make it to bed before the new day begins.
- Why did you decide to study business?
I grew up in a family full of entrepreneurs. Seeing that when growing up gave me no other option – I must become an entrepreneur myself as well. I like the freedom that comes along with it as well as the intense moments when you have to solve problems.
- If you could have any superpower which one would you choose?
The usual answer would probably be flying. I wish my superpower were that I wouldn’t need to sleep. Sometimes I feel bad about how much I sleep…
- Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
As a sportsman – a world champion.
- Your personal advice to those who want to start their own business.
Don’t think for too long – start doing. Otherwise you might change your mind.
- Your favourite quote.
“If in doubt, flat out.”
